Lanterns to 'switch on' Malvern
This year will see the fifth annual lantern parade to mark the Christmas lights switch on and celebrate Malvern's Christmas festivities. We have been busy working with school children, local residents and youth groups to create nearly 300 paper lanterns which will light up church street on Saturday night.
This year, The Wyche School and St James' School West Malvern have each taken part in a day of workshops with professional artists. They have had the chance to create both an individual lantern for each child and some larger lanterns which were made by teams of the older children. Shapes you'll see this year include a sleigh, a snowman and a four-pointed star. Workshops have also been held involving young people Malvern Priory and residents of the Malvern Vale housing estate. Lanterns produced in these workshops include icicles, stars and Christmas presents, and even a giant cracker!
This Saturday (the 3rd of December), Great Malvern will be given over to all things Christmassy in the build up to the Christmas lights switch-on. There'll be music on Belle Vue Island, a Santa's grotto in the library and high quality, artisan food and arts markets in Abbey Road and the Priory Grounds respectively. At 5:45pm, this year's panto star, Philip Martin Brown from Waterloo Road, will lead a parade of lanterns, stilt walkers, drummers and dancers up Church Street to Belle Vue Island where he will switch on the Christmas lights. It promises to be a fun and festive day for all the family and we look forward to seeing you there!
The 2011 Malvern Lantern Parade project was very kindly sponsored by Malvern Hills District Council and Wilkinsons.
